Thank you for your interest in joining the Safe Families movement as a volunteer Family Coach! The role is a flexible opportunity to support the Host Family and family in crisis in tandem with Safe Families staff. From providing transportation for a Host Family to sitting with an overwhelmed parent to process their goals, the Family Coach role is designed for relationship, encouragement, and Circle of Support coordination- especially, when children are being hosted.

The approval process involves completing paperwork, background checks, references, online training and an interview. Our staff will walk you through every step of the way and will reach out to you once you have submitted your application. In order to get started, please complete the first three steps outlined below:

Overview

  1. Submit Application
  2. Thank you for taking the time to tell us more about yourself. It's important that we get to know you as well as possible as we work together to see if Family Coaching is the right SFFC role for you.

    Instructions:
    • Click Here to access the Safe Families for Children coach application
    • From the SFFC Chapter dropdown, select: Oregon - OR - Greater Portland
  3. Training and Ongoing Support
  4. We ask our Family Coaches to complete about 7 hours of online training prior to accepting an assignment so that they are prepared to serve in this crucial role. This can be broken up into smaller segments as desired and details will be provided upon receipt of application. There are also regular, ongoing, in-person/virtual FC training opportunties provided and faciliated by SFFC Staff to provide further training and build community and comradery between our volunteer coaches.

  5. Enroll in the Central Background Registry (CBR)
  6. One way we work to protect children is to make sure our volunteers do not have a criminal history of child abuse or violence. We require that Family Coaches be enrolled in the OR Dept of Education's Central Background Registry.

    • No fees are required for Safe Families volunteers to complete the initial background check online. A small fee ($10-$15) for fingerprinting may be payable online upon setting your appointment
  7. References
  8. It is our policy to recruit Safe Families for Children volunteers whose lives reflect stable personal values and morals, as well who are ready and able to serve in a particular role. FC applicants will be asked to provide three references who can attest to these aspects of your lives.

  9. Provide Supporting Documents
  10. You will be asked to provide your ODL, current auto insurance and a recent photo.

  11. Interview and Final Approval
  12. After all steps above are completed the Family Coach Supervisor will set up a face to face interview. Applicants will be notified by our office of final approval and will then work with staff to be matched with an appropriate FC assignment within your ministry team and/or surrounding community.
